Drugged and Detained: China's Psychiatric Prisons

Drugged and Detained: China’s psychiatric prisons investigates one of the most chilling ways the CCP uses to disappear human rights defenders – forced hospitalization in a psychiatric facility without medical justification. Called Ankang, after the system of police-run psychiatric prisons launched in the 1980s, legal changes introduced a decade ago have done nothing to stop the abuse. Drugged and Detained analyzed data from more than 140 Ankang detentions documented through interviews by local NGOs and media from between 2015 and 2021, to reveal a picture of torment and abuse with some prisoners locked up on wards for years.
